Day 1: Connecting Flights
Our flight from Toronto to Halifax departed at 6pm. Alex made friends with the man beside us on the plane. He had two prosthetic legs and built them as a career. My aspiring physio friend spent the 2 hour flight picking his brain as he gladly spilled the sciences. I tuned in and out as I watched the sunset disappear in fast forward as we lost an hour to the time zone shift. Landing in Halifax was quick, filled with views of wetlands and windmills.
Departure came even faster with a layover giving us just enough time to brush our teeth and wash our faces in the airport bathroom. Here we come London.
Day 2 Red Eye
A red eye flight to London where we then had an 8 hour layover had our bodies confused (departed at 10pm landed at 8am). We found a cute café and had brunch (which ended up being 1 of 2 meals the entire day) and then strolled over to Buckingham palace. We spent a small time admiring the architecture in the nearby park and then had to catch the train back to the airport. Geneva here we come.
We were excited to finally see the mountains from the airplane window. Out into the city, I was quickly able to translate the French and find our way to Nyon Hostel. With little meals and two days with no sleep we arrived in the slow-paced city of Nyon and lights out.
Day 3 Travelling by Train
We awoke in Nyon feeling refreshed. A free hostel breakfast to fill our bellies and friendly chats with our roomies. We strolled down to see the lake, stopping at the market on the way down where I could happily use my French. The lake was filled with sailboats and swans, mountains painted the background. A slow morning was perfect to get us started on our first day in Switzerland - with two trains ahead of us.
First stop Lausanne. Lausanne felt larger than Nyon as everything was taller and closer together. We walked down to the water which lead us to the Olympic centre. As an athlete this was a neat place to visit, we didn’t even go into the museum and it was still wonderful. Walking up the stairs with athletic sculptures and at the top the Olympic flame. A rubberized track was a (runners) highlight featured alongside this museum. Hiking back up the hill to the train station took a toll on our shoulders from carrying around our bags for hours, but finally we are able to rest on the 3 hour ride to Lauterbrunnen.
Stay tuned for posts on the rest of our 16 day trip!
